The San Antonio Youth Commission (SAYC) advises Mayor and City Council on important youth issues. SAYC members develop policy recommendations and organize city-wide benefitting youth in our community.
The San Antonio youth Commission (SAYC) is tasked with advising City Council on matters that directly affect local youth, with the intention of valuing and empowering the City's youth voice to provide a unique insight into City issues and problems. SAYC provides an outlet to youth to civically engage with the City through advocacy and community service.
Currently, in collaboration with Project Worth Teen Ambassadors, the San Antonio Youth Commission is asking all San Antonio youth ages 12 - 19 to participate in the 2024 annual Teen Mental Health Survey.
This survey was made by young people for young people, and will help our San Antonio Youth leaders make suggestions on what would help improve mental health for young people in San Antonio.
In the fall of 2021, the San Antonio Youth Commission partnered with Project Worth Teen Ambassadors to create the first citywide Teen Mental Health Survey through the SA Speak Up website. The survey results were instrumental in amplifying the voice of our younger residents and highlighting many of the mental health challenges young people are experiencing in San Antonio. The Youth Commission used the survey results to develop recommendations to improve mental health resources for young people in San Antonio and presented them to the Deputy City Manager, City Council, and the Superintendents of Bexar County. In addition, the Youth Commissions’ advocacy and recommendations played a significant role in having youth involved in the decision-making for the 25 million dollars of the American Rescue Plan Act funding for Youth Services and Youth Mental Health. The Youth Commission also helped City Staff with the design and youth-centered user experience for the citywide internship website internhubsa, which is set to go live by January of 2023.
In the Summer of 2022, the Youth Commission worked with Texas Public Radio and sponsored the Mucho Gusto Wellness Expo, a free wellness event for young people 12-19. Commission members also participated in the first Teen Mental Health First Aid training from the Center for Health Care Services.
In 2018, the San Antonio Youth Commission (SAYC) focused on raising the visibility of youth issues and developed a youth-informed public policy agenda to share with the City Council.
In August 2019, the SAYC presented policy recommendations on Teen Mental Health, Gun Violence, Transportation, and Education to the CHEC committee and continue to evaluate implementation plans by City leadership.
